How you reset a HoMedics air purifier depends on the model you have. The Clean/Reset filter button (or indicator), ionizer button, and power button are three means of resetting a HoMedics air purifier. All resets address the indicator light that remains on even after cleaning or changing the unit’s filter.

What Does the Red Light on HoMedics Air Purifier Mean?

HoMedics has six air purifier models besides the brand’s other home wellness products. Each air purifier model uses a combination of different air purification systems, which determines the design. The models with red indicator lights are those with UV-C technology and the TotalClean 4-in-1 Small Room Air Purifier.

The TotalClean 4-in-1 Small Room Air Purifier: Based on the device’s hours of use, the power button will flash red when it’s time to replace the HEPA-type filter. After changing or cleaning the filter, you need to reset the indicator light to turn it off.

The models with UV-C technology: These air purifiers use UV-C light to kill germs, bacteria, and viruses by negatively altering the microorganism’s DNA. These negative alterations prevent the microorganism from reproducing and ultimately cause its death.

The LED indicator for the UV-C technology glows blue when you turn it on, and it’s working. It flashes red when the device’s UV-C bulb burns out and needs replacing. Once you’ve replaced the bulb, the LED will return to its blue glow.

Changing the UV-C Bulb

Thanks to the indicator, you don’t have to be confused about when to change the UV-C bulb. To restore the UV-C bulb function, you’d need to change it, and here are the steps to changing it safely:

  • Turn off your air purifier and unplug it from the power outlet.
  • Open the front grill cover by pulling the tabs on either side of the grill cover’s top.
  • Remove the HEPA-type filter to expose the covering of the UV-C bulb.
  • Two screws secure the cover, and you can unscrew them using a Philips-head screwdriver.
  • Set the screws safely and remove the cover to expose the bulb.
  • Push the UV-C bulb from the sides gently and rotate it to remove it.
  • Place the new bulb and reinstall the UV-C bulb cover.
  • Place the HEPA-type filter back into position.
  • Close the unit with the grill cover by placing the bottom tabs into the air purifier’s base.
  • Push the grill cover gently until it latches into position.
  • Reconnect the power cord into a standard AC outlet and press the power button to turn it on.

Remember to reset the indicator to turn it off. Never service or change the UV-C bulb without unplugging the unit’s power cord. Also, you shouldn’t operate the device without the UV-C bulb cover in place, as direct exposure to UV-C rays can be dangerous.

How Do I Reset My HoMedics Air Purifier?

The negative impacts of indoor air pollutants on human health can be minor or severe. For example, symptoms may develop from exposure to high dust concentrations, pet dander, fumes from cleaning products, pollen, etc. These symptoms include the nose, throat, eye irritation, headaches, fatigue, and dizziness.

When the device’s True HEPA filter is saturated or needs replacing, the Clean/Reset filter indicator comes on. The next step is to clean or replace the filter to turn off the indicator. However, the indicator remains on even after you’ve put a clean/new filter into the device.

Resetting the device, specifically the filter indicator, is the only way to turn the light off. It’s pretty easy to reset your HoMedics air purifier, and here’s how to get it done:

  • Ensure you firmly install the True HEPA filter in the device.
  • Turn on the air purifier by plugging the power cable into an AC outlet and pressing the power button.
  • Press and hold the Clean/Reset filter indicator or indicator button.
  • Release the indicator button when you hear an audible chime or the light goes off.

For a TotalClean 5-in-1 UV Large Room Air Purifier

  • Turn on the air purifier by plugging the power cable into an AC outlet and pressing the power button.
  • Press and hold the ionizer button for three seconds, and the indicator will go off.

For a TotalClean 4-in-1 Small Room Air Purifier

  • Turn on the air purifier by plugging the power cable into an AC outlet and pressing the power button.
  • Press and hold the power button for three seconds, and the flashing light on the power button will go off.

Once the light is off, the reset is complete, and you can continue using the air purifier according to your regular settings. Try to repeat the process a few times if the light remains on after resetting. Contact the manufacturer if it still doesn’t work, as it could be a mechanical fault. 

Of course, you should only suspect a mechanical error after you’ve either cleaned or replaced the filter. Remember that the light comes on as a reminder to change or clean your filter. If you leave the filter as is, the light won’t go off either.

How To Clean a HoMedics True HEPA Filter

A clean HEPA filter theoretically rids the air of 99.97% of pollen, dust, bacteria, mold, and other airborne particles sized 0.3 microns. The general recommendation is to change a HEPA filter every six to 12 months. However, you might need to change yours more often if you live in a heavily polluted area.

The Clean/Reset filter indicator light on your HoMedics air purifier comes on when it’s time to clean or change the filters. You should clean the True HEPA filter once a month and replace it every 12 to 18 months. While you cannot wash a HoMedics True HEPA filter, you can clean it by doing these:

  • Turn off your air purifier and unplug it from the outlet.
  • Gently pull on the tabs of the grill cover (on either side of the top) to open it.
  • Pull the cover outward until its bottom tabs slide away easily from the unit.
  • Remove the True HEPA filter from within the device.
  • Put on your vacuum cleaner’s brush attachment.
  • Run the brush attachment along the True HEPA filter, ensuring you get both sides.
  • Clean between the filter’s accordion folds thoroughly.
  • Put the cleaned filter back within the main unit and ensure it’s firmly seated.
  • Replace the front grill cover by placing the bottom tabs into the air purifier’s base.
  • Push the grill cover back into place gently.
  • When you hear a click sound, you’ve securely anchored the grill cover.

Remember to reset the filter Clean/Rest indicator light after powering the air purifier. You can wipe the body of the air purifier with a soft, dry cleaning cloth. Other cleaning precautions include:

  • Never clean the outside of the device or grill cover using wax, water, polish, or any chemical solution.
  • You can use the brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth to clean the grill cover once a month.
  • Never clean the pre-filter or True HEPA filter using water or household detergents or cleaners.

How Do You Reset the Red Light on a HoMedics Air Purifier?

Based on the air purifier model you have, there are two ways to reset the red light on a HoMedics air purifier. On the models with UV-C technology, the red light flashes when it’s time to change the UV-C bulb. Press and hold the ionizer button for three seconds to reset this indicator.

For the TotalClean 4-in-1 Small Room Air Purifier, the red light flashes on the power button when it’s time to replace the filter. To reset this red light, press and hold the power button for three seconds until the flashing light goes off.

It’s easy to reset the red indicator lights on HoMedics air purifiers, but you shouldn’t attempt to reset them without fixing the issues. Instead, change the filters and replace the bulbs when you have to.
